WAM to GPA Converter

Estimate a GPA from your WAM using a selected conversion method. This is an estimated conversion only — conversion methods vary by institution.

Estimate your GPA

No universal conversion: There is no official, universal Australian WAM-to-GPA conversion. Universities, employers and overseas institutions each convert differently — some use bands, some use formulas, some assess your transcript subject by subject. Use this result as a rough guide only.

What is this calculator?

Students often need a GPA when their transcript shows a WAM — for example, when applying overseas, where 4.0-scale GPAs are standard. This tool estimates a GPA from a WAM using the method you select, and labels the result clearly as an estimate.

How does it work?

Band-based methods place your WAM in a grade band (HD, D, C, P, F) on a generic scale and return that band's grade points. The linear method simply scales your WAM onto 0–4.0. The two approaches can give noticeably different answers for the same WAM — that gap is exactly why no estimate should be presented as official.

Formula

Linear estimate: GPA (4.0) ≈ WAM ÷ 100 × 4  ·  Band estimate: GPA = grade points of your WAM's band

Example

A WAM of 75.25: band-based 7-point estimate = 6.0 (Distinction band); band-based 4.0 estimate = 3.0; linear estimate = 75.25 ÷ 100 × 4 = 3.01. Three methods, three slightly different numbers — always check which method your target institution uses.

How to interpret your result

Use the estimate for personal planning and rough comparisons only. If an application asks for a GPA, follow that institution's stated conversion method, or submit your WAM and transcript as-is if they allow it — many assessors prefer to convert Australian results themselves.

Important university-specific considerations

  • Some Australian universities publish their own WAM/GPA equivalences for internal purposes; others publish none.
  • Overseas credential evaluators use their own country-specific conversion tables for Australia.
  • A band-based estimate loses information: a WAM of 75 and a WAM of 84 give the same band GPA, even though the marks differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official WAM to GPA conversion?
No. There is no universal Australian WAM-to-GPA conversion. Institutions convert differently, which is why this tool labels every result an estimated conversion.
Which conversion method should I use?
Use the method your target institution specifies. If they don't specify one, the band-based estimate is the most common style of conversion — but check their admissions guidance first.
Why do the methods give different answers?
Band methods compress a range of WAMs into one grade-point value, while the linear method scales proportionally. The difference is real and is why estimates must not be presented as official figures.
