What is this calculator?
If you have a WAM goal — for honours eligibility, a scholarship, a course transfer or a personal target — this calculator works backwards from that goal. It tells you the average mark you need across everything you have left to study.
How does it work?
Your final WAM will be a credit-point weighted blend of the marks you already have and the marks still to come. The calculator solves for the remaining average that makes the blend equal your target, and tells you plainly if the target is already secured, comfortably reachable, very demanding, or mathematically impossible.
Formula
Required average = [ target × (completed CP + remaining CP) − current WAM × completed CP ] ÷ remaining CP
Example
Current WAM 72 over 96 completed credit points, with 48 credit points remaining and a target of 75: required average = [75 × 144 − 72 × 96] ÷ 48 = [10,800 − 6,912] ÷ 48 = 81. You need approximately an 81 average in your remaining subjects to reach a WAM of 75.
How to interpret your result
- Required average ≤ 50: your target is well within reach if you keep passing.
- 50–85: achievable with consistent work — the higher the number, the less room for a weak subject.
- 85–100: possible but requires near-High-Distinction marks across the board.
- Above 100: impossible — even perfect marks can't lift your WAM to that target. Consider a lower target or a longer timeframe.
- Zero or negative: your target is already secured on marks banked so far.
Important university-specific considerations
This planner assumes the standard credit-point weighted WAM and that all remaining subjects count toward it. If your university weights later years more heavily, excludes some subjects, or treats fails specially, your real required average will differ. Use this as a planning guide and verify with your university's progression rules.
