What is this calculator?
Most subjects combine several assessments — assignments, quizzes, a final exam — each worth a percentage of the final mark. This calculator tells you exactly what you need on the assessment still to come to finish the subject on your target mark.
How does it work?
Your completed work contributes its average multiplied by its weight. The calculator subtracts that banked contribution from your target and divides what's left by the remaining assessment's weight — giving the score you need on that final piece.
Formula
Required mark = [ target − (current average × completed weight ÷ 100) ] ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100)
Example
You're averaging 68 on completed work worth 60%, the final exam is worth 40%, and you want a final mark of 75. Banked: 68 × 0.60 = 40.8. Still needed: 75 − 40.8 = 34.2. Required exam mark: 34.2 ÷ 0.40 = 85.5 — a High Distinction-level exam performance.
How to interpret your result
- Above 100: the target can't be reached in this subject, even with a perfect final assessment. Aim for the best achievable grade instead.
- Zero or below: your target is already locked in — the remaining assessment can't pull you under it.
- Between: that's your number. Compare it with your marks so far to judge how much lift you need.
Important university-specific considerations
Some subjects have hurdle requirements — for example, you must pass the final exam itself, or achieve a minimum on a specific assessment, regardless of your overall average. Others scale or moderate final marks. This calculator handles the arithmetic of weighted averages only; always check your subject outline for hurdles and special rules.
