GPA Calculator (Australia)

Calculate your Grade Point Average from grades and credit points using a configurable Australian grading scale.

Enter your subjects

No universal scale: There is no single Australian GPA conversion. The default scale here is a clearly labelled example. Universities set their own grade points — including how fails and pass/fail subjects count — so verify your official GPA with your university.

What is this calculator?

A GPA (Grade Point Average) converts each of your grades into grade points, then averages them weighted by credit points. In Australia the most common framework is a 7-point scale (HD = 7 down to Fail = 0), but the exact points for each grade — and whether fails count at all — are set by each university.

How does it work?

Choose a grading scale, then add a row per subject with the grade you received and its credit points. Change the scale and the grade-point values update everywhere, which makes it easy to compare how different university rules would treat the same results.

Formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credit points) ÷ Σ (credit points)

Example

Using the example 7-point scale: an HD (7 points) in a 6-credit subject, a D (6) in a 6-credit subject and a C (5) in a 12-credit subject.

(7 × 6) + (6 × 6) + (5 × 12) = 42 + 36 + 60 = 138. Total credit points = 24. GPA = 138 ÷ 24 = 5.75.

How to interpret your result

On a 7-point scale, 7.00 is the maximum. Roughly, 6.0+ reflects Distinction-level performance and 5.0+ Credit-level, but cut-offs for scholarships, honours and postgraduate entry are set by each institution and program. If you need a 4.0-scale GPA for an overseas application, use the WAM to GPA converter and treat the output as an estimate only.

Important university-specific considerations

  • Some universities do not count fail grades in the GPA; others count them as 0 (or 1.5 on some scales).
  • Pass/fail (ungraded) subjects are commonly excluded entirely.
  • A few institutions use a 4-point scale, or different points for the same grade letters.
  • Always confirm the scale on your university's academic record page before relying on a GPA figure.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?
Each grade is converted to grade points using the selected scale, multiplied by the subject's credit points, summed, and divided by total credit points.
Why are there multiple scales to choose from?
Because Australian universities genuinely differ — in grade points, in whether fails count, and in whether the framework is 7-point or 4-point. Hard-coding one scale would make the tool wrong for many students.
Do pass/fail subjects affect my GPA?
At most universities, ungraded pass/fail subjects are excluded from the GPA. If yours includes them, add them with the grade points your university assigns.
Is a 7-point GPA the same as a 4.0 GPA?
No. They are different frameworks. Dividing by seven and multiplying by four is only a rough estimate — use the WAM to GPA converter and treat its output as an estimate.
